According to SABC, Mbalula and Mhlongo faced social media reaction following a video of Mhlongo revealing that the minister told him that the lockdown would be extended.

Mbalula says  Mhlongo acted recklessly and irresponsibly, “Even though Mr Mhlongo guessed it right in his speculative discussion – he went further to mislead the public about the source of his information which undermines and is pre-emptive on government and the president over very sensitive information of a national security caliber of which I am very sensitive to and have adhered to in all my time in the executive, “says Mbalula.

A video of Somizi Mhlongo claiming that he was told about the lockdown extension went viral just hours before President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement.

Metro FM has slammed comments made by presenter Somizi Mhlongo, in which he claimed he had been told by transport minister Fikile Mbalula about the lockdown extension just hours before an official announcement by the president.

The SABC says broadcaster Somizi Mhlongo will face an internal investigation over his utterances about the lockdown being extended. A few hours before President Ramaphosa announced the two-week extension yesterday, Mhlongo said on social media that Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula had told him this would happen. Mbalula has now laid a charge against Mhlongo for what he described as ‘a contravention of government lockdown regulations regarding misinformation and name-dropping’. Mhlongo has since apologised to the minister. The apologies were posted on Instagram
